The city council agreed to pay $25,000 to settle a motor vehicle accident lawsuit which alleged a city employee drove a municipal vehicle in a “reckless, careless, and negligent” manner colliding with a woman’s parked vehicle and causing her “severe and permanent injuries.”

Aracels Diaz’s lawsuit states she was lawfully parked on Preakness Avenue near Birch Street on February 11th, 2013, when city employee Latoya Champion collided with her vehicle. Diaz alleges Champion was operating the vehicle in a “reckless, careless, and negligent” manner that led to the crash.

Champion was operating an ambulance, according to city records.

City resident Diaz states she “sustained severe and permanent injuries” and had to “incur large sums of money for medical and hospital care,” reads her court complaint.

Council members approved $25,000 to settle the lawsuit on Tuesday night.

Champion is no longer on the city’s payroll, according to municipal records.
