Two men were wounded in separate shootings late Saturday night in locations more than two miles apart, according to police.

Police said a 21-year-old city man was wounded in the hip area on Sparrow and Highland Streets at about 10:58 p.m. and a 24-year-old East Orange man was wounded in the legs and torso on Main and Weiss Streets at 11:07 p.m.

The 21-year-old victim was walking on Sparrow Street when he was approached by a masked gunman demanding his personal property. The suspect fired and struck the victim in the hip area, according to police.

Police said the suspect then fled the area on foot and the victim was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center by an acquaintance. The victim is in stable condition, said police.

Less than ten minutes later, police received reports of gunfire on Main and Weiss Streets. Police found a 24-year-old man with several gunshot wounds at the scene. Investigators believe the victim was in some type of an altercation that resulted in the shooting.

One of the individuals involved in the altercation produced a handgun and fired at the victim, said police.

The 24-year-old man was transported to hospital by ambulance. He is surgery, said police. These two shootings raise the number of incidents in October to four following a violent August and September in which the city experienced shootings every weekend.

Police director Jerry Speziale said police are actively pursuing those responsible for the two incidents. “I am confident those responsible will face swift and decisive justice,” he said.
