Councilman Shahin Khalique crashed his brother’s business vehicle in a downtown Paterson car accident, according to police report.

Khalique was traveling straight on Memorial Drive in a white 2014 Audi A7 registered to his brother’s bus company, A-1 Elegant Tour Inc., when a woman driving in opposite direction in a red 2001 Toyota Corolla made a left turn onto Main Street.

The two vehicles collided on August 30th, 2016 at 12:39 p.m., according to the police report. Khalique told police he had the green light while the woman said she was making a left turn when Khalique crashed into her car.

It’s not clear why Khalique was driving a vehicle that belonged to his brother, Shelim Khalique’s transportation company.

Khalique did not respond to a call for comment.

Khalique ran as a business owner in this year’s municipal election ousting former councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman. His campaign filings state he is the owner of Newark-based Northern Star Transportation.

Akhtaruzzaman said Khalique used the same vehicle for much of his campaign. He wondered whether Khalique reported an in-kind contribution for using his brother’s company’s vehicle for campaign purposes.

Khalique reported receiving $2,500 in in-kind contribution from his brother for campaign workers and canvass program, according to state election reports.

Khalique has used the same vehicle insured by the Great American Insurance Group to transport himself to city council meetings since taking office in July.

Both men are battling in court over the outcome of the 2nd Ward election.
