Police officers arrested two men and seized a pistol and a revolver on North Main Street, where a man was shot and killed during the weekend, on Monday evening, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

Speziale said police stepped up patrol of the area following the killing of 28-year-old Gene Bolie. Police received reports of gunfire on North Main and Stout Streets on Monday afternoon which led to further police attention, said the director.

City resident Lateef Scott, 38, of Presidential Boulavard, and Andre Hargrove, 43, of North 3rd Street, were among a group of people drinking in public and blocking the sidewalk on Stout Street close to North Main Street at about 7:15 p.m.

Detectives got out of their vehicle to issue tickets. Hargrove put his hands up and said he had a gun. He was quickly secured by detective William Niebanck and officer Jose Torres.

Hargrove had a loaded Ruger .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, said police. Scott ran on Stout Street towards Holsman Street, but could not get far as detective Anthony Castronova and Sergeant Richard LaTrecchia gave chase.

Scott put up a violent struggle, but was subdued. He had a loaded STOEGER ARMS Revolver in his waistband.

Police detained a third person that was in the group. He was released after a citation was issued, said the director. Both Scott and Hargrove have been charged with various weapons offenses.

Both men have been charged with persons not to have weapons. Both are being held at the Passaic County Jail.

Police said both weapons will be submitted to state labs to determine if they were involved in other crimes.

“The men and women of the unit have really stepped up their game and are working tirelessly in making a safer city,” said Speziale.
