Detectives patrolling the vicinity of North Main Street, a known high crime area, spotted a large group drinking alcohol on the sidewalk late Friday night.

City resident Quadir Nunez, 19, who was among the group, saw the detectives get out of their vehicle at about 11:20 p.m. to issue ordinance violations to the group consuming alcohol on the sidewalk outside of 111 North Main Street. He began to walk away as detective Anthony Castronova approached him. He ran on North Main Street towards Stout Street.

Police said he discarded a 9mm semi-automatic pistol as he fled from police, but Castronova followed. Castronova was joined by detective William Hermann. Both detectives captured Nunez on Stout Street just off of North Main Street without an incident.

Nunez was charged with weapons offenses and resisting arrest by flight, said police director Jerry Speziale. He had several outstanding warrants. He is being held on $75,000 bond without 10-percent option, said police.

“The vigilance and determination displayed by the Street Crime Unit has removed another firearm from our streets,” said Speziale.
