Angel Leonor earned perfect scores in both math and English standardized exams. He was among 112 students recognized in a ceremony at John F. Kennedy High School on Wednesday evening.

“This is truly an exceptional achievement,” remarked state-appointed district superintendent Donnie Evans speaking about Leonor, ninth grader at International High School, who earned a perfect score in English section of PARCC and a 5 on the math portion.

Leonor built up to the perfect scores in high school by earning perfect scores in the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK) science portion in the fourth and eighth grades.

School officials recognized each of the 112 students by providing them achievement certificates. 90 students exceeded grade level expectations on both math and English sections of the PARCC. Of those, 5 received a perfect score on the English portion, 1 received a perfect score on the PARCC math and NJASK science, according to the district.

22 others received perfect scores on NJASK science. Of those 2 received perfect scores when tested in fourth and eighth grades.

“Our children can perform as well as any district around here,” said school board member Errol Kerr as he praised the high-achieving students. Majority of the students recognized were from School 28 which is home to the Paterson Gifted and Talented Academy.

“These students are the embodiment of everything we are striving to accomplish as we seek to fulfill our stated mission to prepare each student for success in the college or university of their choosing and in their chosen career,” said Evans.

The annual recognition ceremony took a break last year as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam was being “baselined” in its first year of implementation, according to the district.
