A city man was shot in the leg on Wednesday morning when a fight broke out between a group on 12th Avenue and East 23rd Street, according to the Paterson Police Department.

Police said the 20-year-old victim was shot in the leg at around 10:40 a.m. when an altercation escalated to a physical fight. One male suspect produced a handgun and fired at the victim striking him in the leg.

The victim got himself transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center by private vehicle. He is in stable condition at the hospital.

Paterson has had a rash of shootings over the last 36 hours. Police scrambled to respond to gunfire at different parts of the city on Tuesday afternoon. Police officers were investigating gunfire on Hillman Street and Market Street.

Two rounds fired on Southard and Market Streets led to lockdown of four nearby schools for student and staff safety.

Eastside High School, New Roberto Clemente School, School 15, and School 11 (the Newcomers School) went into lockdown twice yesterday afternoon. James Smith, security director for the Paterson Public Schools, said the lockdowns lasted 15 minutes each.
