The city council gave preliminary approval to borrow $1.38 million for the renovation of the historic Hinchliffe Stadium on Tuesday night. This follows two previous rejections from the council as mayor Jose “Joey” Torres’ administration bundled other recreation facilities projects into the borrowing measure.

Council members approved the borrowing measure without opposition. This measure funds environmental remediation at Hinchliffe Stadium, Overlook Park, and the ATP site. It also funds the first phase of construction at the stadium and improvements to the Overlook Park and the ATP site, according to the ordinance.

The twice rejected borrowing measure was for $2.6 million and it included funds for a new fieldhouse at Bauerle Field and rehabilitation of the Paterson Armory. Both of these projects were removed from the ordinance to secure the council’s approval.

Council members will consider final approval for the borrowing measure on June 27th, 2017 at 7 p.m. The city has to secure approval from the state’s local finance board to move ahead with borrowing the funds.
