Police have charged two city boys with committing three gunpoint robberies at three different locations in the interior of Paterson.

The boys, 16 and 17, were caught when trying to commit their third gunpoint robbery on Monday afternoon. Both boys targeted a female victim at about 2:47 p.m. on 22nd Avenue and East 30th Street.

Off-duty state trooper Holland Mack saw the incident and began following both. He alerted police while continuing to follow the two suspects. Police officers Selba Perez, Angel Gonzalez, Eddie Pichardo, and Andres Brea arrived and placed both boys under arrest.

Police recovered a gun from one boy and robbery proceeds from the other. Detectives determined both boys were responsible for two other robberies that occurred on Monday.

In the first robbery, both boys targeted a 15-year-old boy on 8th Avenue and East 16th Street at about 11:45 a.m. The victim was assaulted and robbed of his cellphone at gunpoint. He sustained a bloody nose, but refused medical care, said police.

In the second robbery, just 45 minutes after the first, both boys targeted a female victim on 7th Avenue and East 26th Street. A shaken victim reported a suspect placed a firearm to her head while another grabbed her cellphone. Both suspects then rummaged through her pockets for valuables.

Detective Charlie Garcia was investigating the two earlier robberies. He determined the two boys were also responsible for the other to similar robberies. Both boys were charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, and six counts of weapons possession, said police.

Both were also charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. Police transported both to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center pending a hearing.
