The Paterson Museum is hosting a new exhibit highlighting the historic connection between the country’s capital – Washington D.C. – and the birth place of the American industrial revolution – Paterson — in celebration of the Silk City’s 225th birthday.

Some of the interesting highlights of the exhibition include the famous meeting of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Marquis de Lafayette at the Great Falls during the American Revolutionary War.

Washington’s letter to George Mason detailing the condition and need of the army from his headquarters at the Great Falls.

Hamilton’s report on the “Subject of Manufactures” that ultimately leads to the founding of Paterson. Hamilton’s hiring of Pierre L’Enfant, designer of Washington D.C., to create a plan for the city.

Benjamin Latrobe, designer of the U.S. Capitol, visits the Great Falls on his honeymoon. Henry Bacon, designer of the Lincoln Memorial, designs the Danforth Memorial Library on Broadway.

Architectrual firm Carrère & Hastings’ design of the Paterson City Hall. Same firm designed Cosmos Club, Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, and the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington D.C.

The exhibition also highlights the important role Paterson played in American history through inventions like the modern submarine by John Holland, aircraft engine to power the Spirt of St. Louis for first solo non-stop transatlantic flight, and the Colt revolver.

The Wright firm also created the engine for the Enola Gay that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

There’s also much more recent history like Kathryn Sullivan, the first woman to walk in space, was born in Paterson.

Called “A Tale of Two Historic Cities” the exhibit will open at the Paterson Museum on Saturday, July 1, 2017. Reception on July 4, 2017 at 11:30 a.m.

Paterson Museum is located at 2 Market Street.
