Jersey City police officer and former Paterson board of adjustment member Ehab Abdelaziz received an 18-month prison sentence on Thursday for collecting payments for off-duty work that was never performed, according to federal authorities.

Abdelaziz, 38, of Clifton, has to pay $33,955 in restitution and forfeit $22,449. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery.

From Dec. 2015 through Jun. 2016, he paid $11,825 in bribe payments to another Jersey City officer with the authority to assign off-duty work in exchange for that officer’s help in submitting phony work completed vouchers to the police department. As a result, Abdelaziz received payment for work that he never performed.

Private contractors and utility companies hire off-duty police officers to direct traffic at work sites.

Abdelaziz was hired by Jersey City in 2012. His salary was $92,200, according to state records. He is the brother of former 6th Ward council candidate Ala “Al” Abdelaziz.

Councilwoman Maritza Davila appointed Ehab Abdelaziz to the Board of Adjustment in 2016. The police officer later resigned his board of adjustment post following the guilty plea.
