The New Jersey Board of Education is taking a vote on Wednesday morning to potentially end almost three decades of state takeover of the Paterson school district.

State education officials will consider two resolutions to restore control to the local school board. Paterson schools were taken in 1991 for academic failure and management incompetence.

The district began regaining pieces of local control beginning in 2014. School board regained control over three of five areas.

Earlier in the year, school officials said the state certified the latest Quality Single Accountability Continuum (QSAC), a metric the state uses to evaluate public school districts, scores. In all five areas the district scored above 80-percent, the minimum needed to secure local control of an area.

The district educates 28,000 students and employs almost 4,000 people.
