The body found in the backseat of a car on Marion Street over the weekend has been identified as Shanaya Coley who had been missing for six months, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Coley died from puncture and incision wounds, authorities said. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

She was reported missing on December 5, 2017. Police found her body in the backseat of the charcoal gray Nissan Altima that was registered to her on May 6, 2018. A tenant said the vehicle had been parked at the garden apartment complex at 238 Marion Street for months.

Police received a call from a concerned resident that led to the discovery of her vehicle and body inside it.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Newark has positively identified the body as that of 24-year-old Coley.

Authorities continue to investigate the case. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-877-370-PCPO or [email protected] or contact the Paterson Police Department Detective Bureau at 973-321-1120.
