Firefighters put out flames at an abandoned factory building on Piercy Street that started in an area with rubbish and pallets on Saturday evening, according to fire officials.

Firefighters responded to the former Galaxy Chemical Corporation complex at about 7:35 p.m. after a passerby, who saw smoke coming out of the building, called in the fire.

Deputy fire chief Pablo Del Valle said the fire was at 26 Piercy Street. Firefighters put out the flames at the one-story commercial that is attached to the larger four-story structure.

Firefighters discovered barrels of chemicals inside the building. Del Valle on Sunday morning said he was not sure of the substance inside the containers.

Passaic County Hazmat was called, said the deputy chief. Also, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was notified.

There were no exposures or injuries, said Del Valle.

The large complex extends for a whole city block and has been abandoned for years.

There was a previous fire at the same building, according to a fire official.
