The school board approved the five-year teachers’ contract with 3-percent annual pay increase on Wednesday night.

Board members voted 6-1 to approve the contract. Under the new agreement, which runs from Jul. 2017 through Jun. 2022, teachers will move up one step on the salary guide regardless of “effective” or “highly effective” rating.

School board members approved the contract without making any public comments. Members of the Paterson Education Association, the teacher’s union, ratified the contract in a 2,304-279 vote in late May.

Both the district and the union have hailed the contract as a positive. The agreement was struck following a 19-hour marathon negotiation session in March.

School board members Vincent Arrington, Emanuel Capers, Manny Martinez, Joel Ramirez, Nakima Redmon, and Oshin Castillo voted in favor while Jonathan Hodges voted against.
