A city man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for robbing a TD Bank in Paterson and an Investors Bank in Clifton.

James M. Chestnut, 63-year-old, received a 151-month prison sentence for robbing both banks in summer 2017. He had previously pleaded guilty to robbing the banks, authorities said.

On June 30, 2017, Chestnut walked into a TD Bank in Paterson and handed a note to the teller: “Put 100s and 50s in the envelope. No dye pack.”

On July 5, 2017, Chestnut entered an Investors Bank in Clifton and approached a teller, this time brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. He told the teller to “Open your drawer. Give me your money. All the 100s. Don’t call the cops or I’ll shoot you,” authorities said.

On July 3, 2017, Chestnut tried to rob a Chase Bank in Saddle Brook.

Judge Williams Walls imposed the sentence Wednesday in the Newark federal courthouse. In addition to prison time, Walls sentenced Chestnut to three years of supervised release.
