The police are investigating an attempted luring incident that occurred close to School 12 on Tuesday morning.

Three girls walking to School 12 were approached by a man driving a white van, said school and law enforcement officials.

The suspect, described as slender, tall, black man with glasses, got out of the van and began to chase the girls.

James Smith, head of security at the Paterson Public Schools, said the three girls, who attend School 12, ran to the school physically unharmed. He said they provided a description of the suspect for police.

Police director Jerry Speziale said the patrol division responded to the school and took a report of the incident.

Speziale said the Major Crimes Unit is investigating the reported incident.

The school district is issuing a robo call to alert parents and students, said Paul Brubaker, spokesman for the Paterson Public Schools. He said the call urges parents to instruct their children to steer clear of strangers and avoid walking alone.

Anyone who sees the van or the suspect — slender, tall, black man with glasses – is asked to call the Detective Bureau at (973) 321-1120.
