The city’s school district will be closed on Tuesday to allow voters “free and unfettered access to their polling places,” announced the district over the weekend. A growing list of school systems around the U.S. that have been closing on Election Day due to security concerns.

School officials issued a robocall to inform parents of the unplanned closure on Sunday afternoon.

District schools, which serve as polling sites, have remained open on Election Day in past years.

Paul Brubaker, spokesman for the Paterson Public Schools, did not respond to a call and message seeking his comment on why the district has decided to close schools for Election Day this year or if it had any connections with the threats made against district schools last week.

More than a dozen schools were operating in “sheltering in place” mode last week after a shooting threat against Eastside High School.

“This decision was made after consultation with the Paterson Board of Education, the Paterson Education Association, the Paterson Principals Association, the Paterson Police Department and the Mayor’s Office. We hope that all Paterson voters come out to vote this Tuesday, November 6,” read a district statement Brubaker issued on Monday morning.
