The city is resurfacing more than a dozen roadways, mostly in 1st and 5th Wards, early next year.

Municipal officials awarded a $2.27 million contract to Smith-Sondy Asphalt Construction of Wallington to resurface 14 roadways in 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Wards.

The resurfacing is part of ex-mayor Jose “Joey” Torres’ $37 million road repair project. The city borrowed $35 million to repair all its primary roadways. Torres proposed the hugely expensive plan after hearing large number of complaints from residents while campaigning for his non-consecutive third term in office in 2014.

Mayor Andre Sayegh, who opposed borrowing funds to repair roadways four years ago, is continuing his predecessor’s repair program.

It’s not clear how many of the 170 primary roadways Torres promised to resurface has been completed. In late 2016, the city provided documents that showed 57 road segments had been finished. Torres had said all the roadways would be completed by early 2018.

Council members were provided a list of the 14 streets slated for resurfacing:

  1. Jefferson Street from Burhans Avenue to Presidential Boulevard [1]
  2. Ryle Avenue from Totowa to Matlock Avenue [1]
  3. Totowa Avenue from Ryle Avenue to West Broadway [1]
