Paterson councilman Luis Velez arrested for alleged violation of restraining order

luis-velez

Councilman Luis Velez was escorted out of City Hall by a police officer on Tuesday night for allegedly violating a restraining order.

Velez, who is involved in a messy domestic violence case with his wife, Evelyn Sanchez, was at City Hall for a workshop meeting.

Both publicly exchanged accusation of domestic violence last week.

A police officer walked him out of the building at about 8:20 p.m. He was not placed in handcuffs.

Velez, who represents the 5th Ward, was put inside a police car and presumably taken to the Frank X. Graves Public Safety building.

Velez is accused of violating a restraining order, according to a law enforcement source.

The arrest will not affect his role as a councilman. Violation of a restraining order is a fourth-degree offense, according to the source. State law says a person convicted of a third-degree offense or above has to forfeit public office.

Velez could not be reached for comments on Wednesday morning. His attorney, Michael DeMarco, also could not be reached for comments.

    Why wasn't he handcuffed?

    • bigron

      Why should he?

      • Dominick Perez

Because he was arrested. I guess he's entitled to special treatment.

        • bigron

          That's right.

She should be arrested too. these latin women are violent as F–k always beating up their men in public over some imagined jealousy.

    • bigron

      Speaking from experience?

      • MarquinhoGaucho

yes, they have that "novela" mentality. Get yourself a nice Brazilian girl, no drama, they are cool as hell be they are self confident and know how to take care of their man..plus they cook really good. A man who eats good at home does not go to restaurants.

        • bigron

Yes, for sure, they do give a man much more than others, including a deadly dose of HIV.

          • MarquinhoGaucho

You are so uninformed. The whole HIV thing is centered around Rio de Janeiro which is a sh_thole, and the center of sex tourism and drug addicts and gangs(paterson of brazil) ..Brazil is a huuuge country. Go to my part in the South..Santa Catarina/Rio Grande do Sul…. most people are of pure European extraction . The girls look like Gisel Bunchen and Alessandra Ambrosio, they are conservative and hard to get. Not Like the ratchet Rio thots. Go to Youtube and put in BRAZIL WITH MICHAEL PALIN | The Deep South Preview | PBS…about Pomorode is near where my mother is from.

I am hoping there will be some investigation, there is no way a public official should be involved in a domestic violence and continue to be compensated by tax payer.
I could suggest that he take a leave of absence from the job.
Domestic violence charges are a serious even if this is an allegation at this present time.
I am not sure a restraining order would have being issued if the claim was unfounded . So there could be some truth to DV.
