The police arrested a man and a woman for allegedly stealing rims and tires off vehicles parked on the streets overnight, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

Sarita Escobar, 26, and Luis Marrero, 26, both of Paterson, were arrested on Monday. Police officers spotted the pair’s silver Honda Odyssey at 16th Avenue and Carroll Street that matched the description of a vehicle wanted for a rash of rim and tire thefts.

Police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Market and Seeley streets. Police officers observed what appeared to be tires hidden underneath a red blanket. There were also creates inside the vehicles.

Police officers Mohammad Bashir and Jon Dabal immediately connected the pieces with the rash of incidents in which vehicle rims and tires were taken off and cars left on top of crates. Since April 1, 2019, police received multiple reports of similar thefts throughout the city occurring at night and in the early morning hours.

The pair were tied to thefts at Sheridan and Totowa avenues, 457 East 22nd Street, Mill Street, and Slater Street.

Police seized the Honda and held it for evidence. Escobar and Marrero were taken to headquarters and charged with theft of property and receiving stolen property.
