A former Eastside High School student has filed a lawsuit against the Paterson Public Schools alleging she sustained “severe and extensive” injuries after a metal pole fell on her at the gymnasium.

Miasia Shepperson filed the suit on Friday. On Nov. 13, 2017, Shepperson, who was a student at the time, was at the high school’s gymnasium when a large metal pole that was allegedly “improperly stored and placed upright against the gymnasium door” fell and landed on her.

Shepperson’s lawsuit states the school allegedly “created the dangerous condition.” She suffered “temporary and permanent disability” due to the incident, according to the suit.

She has incurred “numerous medical expenses,” says the lawsuit. It does not list the amount of money she has had to spend on medical expenses.

Shepperson is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and legal costs of the lawsuit.

The school district has yet to file an answer to Shepperson’s court complaint.
