The Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) will begin work this month to replace 20 miles of old gas pipes with new piping in Paterson.

Workers will replace aging cast iron gas pipes with new durable plastic and or coated steel piping, according to the company.

Work will begin on December 9, 2019. Workers will be engaged Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. There may be some Saturdays if the weather permits.

Gas main replacement portion of the work will run throughout 2020 in various parts of Paterson. Upgrades are part of PSEG’s five-year plan to replace 875 miles of pipes and other gas infrastructure in New Jersey through 2023.

“Like aging roads and bridges, all infrastructures need to be maintained — and eventually replaced — to preserve its integrity. Gas infrastructure is no different,” Michael Gaffney, senior director of PSE&G’s Gas System Modernization Program, said. “PSE&G has 3,600 miles of cast iron pipe, more than any other utility in the country, and the majority of those pipes have been in the ground for decades. After all that time, cast iron and unprotected steel pipes can crack and corrode. The new durable plastic pipes will improve reliability, reduce the possibility of leaks, and ensure the continued safety of gas service for customers.”

Residents will be informed where and when the work will take place. Door hangers will be placed at homes to notify residents when work begins in their area. There will also be a social media campaign to notify residents of the work.

“I am pleased that PSE&G is continuing to perform important work to revitalize Paterson’s aging gas infrastructure,” mayor Andre Sayegh said. “These additional upgrades will ensure Paterson’s residents and small businesses have safe and reliable gas service for many years to come.”

Work will affect the following streets:
