The number of people tested positive for the new coronavirus has increased to 49 in Passaic County, including 16 in Paterson, according to health officials.

Paterson and Clifton, with 17 infected people, have the most cases in Passaic County.

Mayor Andre Sayegh has placed Paterson under lockdown, forcing nonessential businesses to indefinitely close and houses of worship to cease congregational gatherings, due to the rapid spread of Covid-19.

Sayegh administration officials have not released details of each of the Paterson cases.

Among the previously reported positive cases in Paterson were a married couple and their five-year-old child. And a person in their late 40s.

No deaths have been reported in Paterson.

Clifton’s cases are 9 women and 8 men ranging from 18 to 62 years of age. 5 of those tested positive for the virus are healthcare workers, according to that city’s health department.

Woodland Park has five cases. Passaic City has reported three. Pompton Lakes and Wayne each had two cases. Bloomingdale, Haledon, and Hawthorne each have one case, according to information released by Passaic County on Friday.

New Jersey has 890 cases. 11 people have died in the state from the virus. 86 tests are pending at the state lab, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.

Health officials expect the cases to increase as more testing becomes available. Passaic County officials are gathering personnel and equipment to start a drive-through testing station at William Paterson University.
