Hundreds of artists joined together to create what was the two day Paterson Artwalk, hosted by the Art Factory and Ivanhoe Artists Mosaic, centered around the Great Falls Historic District. Not to be confused with last week’s event that was held outside along the falls. This one however, was held indoors in the Dolphin Mills complex encompassing 17 buildings.

Robyn Thompson and her partner James Fry, a professional comic book artist, participated in the event by painting peoples’ dreams on their face. She told us that she wouldn’t be going to the Jersey Shore because the Artwalk was this weekend.

Hugo Munoz who does naif style paintings – or freestyle paintings, was at first reluctant to share his artwork with the Ivanhoe Artists Mosaic, but after much persuasion he finally opened up. Mr Munoz’s lifelong collection was destroyed by a tragic fire in January of 2011. Nothing was going to dampen his spirits because he created new ones for the event.

Among all the paintings, sculptures, and photography there was a reception being held at the Ivanhoe Wheelhouse for Janett Rodriguez celebrating her praised artwork. Ms Rodriguez paints Kahloesque self-portraits; Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist of the 20th century who drew self-portraits characterized by vibrant colors and primitive style.

Ms Rodriguez was picked to be the artist of the month for May. During her reception, raffles were being sold for a dollar each. The raffle winner would walk away with an oil painting created by her. “I did this because I wanted to create an environment in which the attendants could feel closer to my work. It gave them the chance to go home with a painting that they could hopefully cherish as much as I do,” said Ms Rodriguez.

Nicolas Rodriguez — no relations to Janett — was ecstatic when he won the raffle. Ms Rodriguez’s and many other art galleries will be available for the next three months at the Art Factory.

The thousands of visitors that showed up to the two day event left delighted to have been part of an extraordinary 5th Annual Paterson Artwalk.
