Charter school hands out turkeys and food-filled tote bags

The city’s newest charter school held a dinner event on Tuesday evening to hand out dozens of Turkeys and tote bags filled with packaged goods to families of students.
School staff members, teachers and administrative staff, joined students and their families, to celebrate an early Thanksgiving on Tuesday evening at the Paterson Arts and Science Charter School campus on East 33rd Street.
Nihat Guvercin, the president of the North Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools, a network of high-achieving schools operating out of Bergen and Passaic counties, broke bread with his charter family. Jeffrey Jones, the city’s mayor, also joined the charter school staff and families during the event.
“North Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools organized a successful Thanksgiving Dinner Food for Thought Campaign this year,” said Elmina Scillia, a spokesperson for the school. “The campaign provided a wonderful opportunity for all of our schools to collect food donations, monetary donations and gift cards that was distributed during our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Staff and Families.”
After eating a turkey dinner inside the auditorium of the school, families were handed red tote bags filled with quantities of canned and packaged foods for later consumption. Inside the auditorium were large boxes filled with frozen turkeys that were handed out to families for use on Thursday, during Thanksgiving.
Much of the donations that were collected during the previous weeks were handed out to families of students at the network’s various schools located in Northern New Jersey. “These donations went directly to family members of our school community,” wrote Scillia.
