City offices and schools closed due to snowstorm on Friday

The city sent messages to registered residents through its emergency alert system informing them local government offices will be closed on Friday due to bad weather.

“Due to the anticipated snow totals all city offices will be closed Friday January 3, 2014,” read the announcement.

The storm is set to blanket the city with almost a foot of snow, according to weather forecasts. The National Weather Service, which issued a winter storm warning for the entire state of New Jersey, estimates “snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches.”

The service issued the warning due to high winds: “15 to 25 mph with occasional gusts up to 35 mph.” And “wind chills, zero to 10 below zero late tonight and Friday.”

The service warns residents to avoid the roads for the next 16 hours. “Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only Travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food. And Water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” according to the service.

The announcement issued out of the mayor’s office closes all city offices for Friday.

The city’s public schools will be closed Friday; the Community Charter School of Paterson will be closed as well.
