The city paid out $3,474 settlement for five vehicle related incidents while receiving $4,589 for two other incidents.

During Tuesday’s special meeting the City Council approved settlements for five different incidents involving the city. An incident that happened in July 25th, 2013, when an employee of the city’s Department of Public Works was cutting grass with a machine, the machine tossed a rock into the air damaging a nearby vehicle. Discoverline Company, the owner of the vehicle, was issued $220.

In another incident on September 30th, 2013, a vehicle being driven by a department employee struck another car on 12th Avenue, causing enough damage to the vehicle for the city to fork out $2,257.07 to the vehicle’s owner, Kitty Clark.

On October 20th, 2013, a vehicle belonging to Devinder Bawa, a Haledon resident, was struck by a Paterson Police car near 7th Street and Belmont Avenue – the city is paying $500 to cover the damage to Bawa’s vehicle.

On October 28th, 2013, an incident involving a Paterson Fire Department emergency medical service vehicle, resulted in $321.43 worth of damage to Bethany Meyer’s vehicle who was driving near Oldham Road and Central Avenue in Wayne.

Ibrahim Dairi, a city resident, had his vehicle improperly towed by an officer on December 2nd, 2013. Dairi filed a complaint and the city had to pay $176 for its mistake.

The city wasn’t just doling out money for its slips on Tuesday, it also gained money from two settlements. The city received $376 from a vehicle accident that happened on October 23rd, 2012, when a vehicle was damaged near East 18th Street and 8th Avenue. Similarly, a January 8th, 2013 accident involving a vehicle resulted in the city receiving $4,212.

The losses were approved for settlement and the gains were accepted. Council members were thrilled that the city was receiving money rather than giving them out as is typically the case whenever the city holds a special meeting to discuss pending litigation.
