The Schools Development Authority (SDA), state agency that builds schools, is holding its first offsite meeting in International High School on Wednesday, May 7th, 2014.

Advocates for the city schools are setting up poster boards to present images of the poor condition the city’s public schools are in to the agency.

“Many of Paterson schools lack functioning heating and cooling systems, as well as technology infrastructure necessary for Paterson students to fully participate in the state’s new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) standardized testing,” read a statement Parent Education Organizing Council, an advocacy. “Parents are hopeful that this meeting will show a renewed commitment to Paterson by the SDA to start needed construction and repairs.”

Education advocates have long complained about the agency’s slow construction pace. A decade ago it laid the foundations of the Hazel-Marshall school, but abandoned it soon thereafter, leading many to protest at the site. Since then, the agency is begun building two schools in the city as was announced last year.

Advocates are hoping the agency does much more to alleviate the severe overcrowding plaguing the city’s schools.
