A group of city men in bicycles near Bridge Street became the subject of a shooting during the evening hours of Tuesday when a shooter stepped out of a vehicle and wounded two men, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victims, a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old, were in bicycles on Bridge Street at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday when a vehicle passing by stopped, a gunman exited the car, and began firing at the group of bicyclers.

“At this time it appears that a group of approximately six males were riding bicycles in the area of River and Bridge Streets when a dark colored vehicle approached the intersection,” Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit, said. “At that time, an unknown male exited the vehicle, and fired numerous rounds in the direction of the group on bicycles, striking two of the males.”

The 19-year-old sustained gunshot wound to the left hand and the 21-year-old was wounded in the back, Murray said. The other four men were unhurt in the shooting.

Police responded to the area after receiving alerts of gunfire. Officers located both victims in the company of officers from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office on the Arch Street bridge. The victims were transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. Both are in stable condition, police said.

A sheriff’s office who observed a man walking around the area with a gun near the shooting scene was arrested on Holsman Street, but police said he was not involved in the shooting incident. Ruby Garrett, the arrested gunman, was charged with weapons offense. “It does not appear that he was involved in the shooting incident,” Murray said.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting incident is asked to contact Detective Rolando Polio or Detective Edgar Taylor of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
