Accidents involving city vehicles, property damage over police raid cost city $48,000

Officials on Tuesday evening approved $48,000 to settle five outstanding claims against the city: over one improper vehicle towing, one over a plow truck incident where a car was struck by a city public works vehicle, one over a resident claiming his property was damaged following a police raid, and two over accidents involving city vehicles.

The settlement ranged from $200 to $37,000. The largest claim was made for $37,500 by Pedro Aguiar, whose vehicle was involved in an alleged accident with a city owned truck on January 10th, 2011, according to city records.

In another accident, on August 28th, 2013, a city vehicle struck a car belonging to Tunisha Wise, who filed a claim against the city. Wise’s claim was settled for $5,005.

The city settled an additional claim, the smallest in the batch, for $195 over an improper towing of a vehicle belonging to Rafael Solano. Solano’s vehicle was improperly towed by the city on April 29th, 2014.

A fourth claim by Mahammad Mahmoud, whose vehicle was damaged by a city plow truck on February 13th, 2014, was settled for $1,904, according to records. The fifth claim involved the city’s police department.

On March 31st, 2009, police raided Ahmed Zulfiquar’s home, causing alleged damages to the property. Zulfiquar’s claim was settled for $3,600, according to records.

Council members discussed the settlements in closed door, executive sessions, prior to approving the settlement monies.
