A city man was wounded while inside a vehicle near North Main and Arch streets during the evening hours of Sunday, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 21-year-old, was in the area of Arch and Main Streets at around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday when he was struck by gunfire. “The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was in the area of North Main/Arch Streets when multiple shots were fired and he was struck while inside a vehicle,” Patrick Murray of the Ceasefire Unit said.

Police responded to the location after receiving alerts of gunfire in the area. Officers were unable to find a victim at the scene. Minutes later calls came from St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center that a victim had arrived by means of private vehicle at the emergency room.

The victim who sustained gunshot wounds to the upper torso area obtained help from a nearby residence of friends following the shooting, police said. “The victim then drove to the residence of some friends seeking assistance, and was driven to the hospital from that location,” Murray said.

The victim was immediately taken to surgery. He remains in critical but stable condition, police said.

The investigation is continuing at this time, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Francisco Brito or Detective Aramis Alba of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342. No other information will be released at this time.
