Abelardo Romero, an Eastside High School teacher, who is alleged to have had sex with a 17-year-old student, will be terminated.

In a statement Terry Corallo, spokesperson for the city’s school district, said: “After confirmation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Adelardo Romero, a non-tenured mathematics teacher at Eastside’s School of Information Technology, will be terminated effective today for conduct unbecoming a staff member.”

Romero’s termination comes after the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office levied nine counts of sexual assault charges against him on Friday morning.

The math teacher, who has been with the district since September 2012, is also being charged with endangering the welfare of a child, said a press release from acting prosecutor Carolyn Murray’s office.

Murray’s office did not elaborate on the details of the case. For example, when and how the teacher made contact with the student; whether the student was in one of Romero’s classes in the information technology school; or the date of when the alleged incident took place or whether there were multiple incidents.

Authorities in Essex County said Romero, who resides in Montclair, surrendered to local police on Thursday evening. Police took him into custody setting a $150,000 bail for his release.
