A federally funded labor training program was launched by the Passaic County Community College (PCCC) on Wednesday morning. The program called the Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC) looks to train and place individuals into high demand jobs in industries like healthcare, information technology, and energy.

“I’m thrilled to announce the launch of PCCC’s newest job training program, which marks a key investment in our nation’s workforce,” said congressman Bill Pascrell. “The NRC program will train and place individuals in fields such as healthcare and information technology while helping to build a more resilient workforce for the 21st century.”

Pascrell secured $9 million for the college last year through the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant program paving the way for today’s launch.

The congressman last September announced the college would receive $8,998,233 to prepare citizens for high-skilled 21st century jobs.

“Thanks to Congressman Bill Pascrell, the Federal government is playing an innovative role in helping America stay competitive by equipping higher education to train and educate tomorrow’s workforce today,” the college’s president Steven Rose said.

The program is expected to serve 3,400 participants mostly Trade Adjusted Assistance (TAA) workers, those who were displaced by increased imports and businesses shifting production out of the country. It will also equip veterans and other individuals with the skills necessary to obtain jobs in the three leading sectors of the economy.

“Community colleges play a vital role in training workers to meet the needs of employers today,” Pascrell said. “Through this federal grant, PCCC and their partner colleges are poised to take their work to even greater heights and help define what resiliency means for individuals, employers and entire communities grappling with disaster and economic transformation.”

In partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, the program seeks to prepare students for high demand jobs in the healthcare field. The Healthcare sector is predicted to become the largest employer of Passaic County residents for skilled laborers.

“We have always had a strong relationship with PCCC and are excited to be involved in these two innovative workforce-development initiatives,” added director of recruitment at St. Joseph’s Hospital Nicole Moody. “By intentionally connecting the needs of employers in the design and development of certificate and degree programs, PCCC is working to ensure a greater level of success in future employment—for the job seeker and the employer.”
