A city man was wounded near Belmont Avenue during the early morning hours of Friday, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 21-year-old, was in the area of Belmont Avenue and North 8th Street at around 2:15 a.m. on Friday when he was struck by gunfire. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper leg, police said.

Police said a male suspect approached the victim. Brandished a handgun and demanded his possessions. “The suspect at that time made a verbal demand for the victim’s property, and when the victim replied that he had none, the suspect fired at the victim, striking him in the leg,” said Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit.

The victim made his way to the St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center’s trauma center in private vehicle, Murray said. The victim is in stable condition at the hospital, police said.

The investigation is continuing at this time, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Christopher Ravallese or Prosecutor’s Detective Michael Boone of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
