A city man who was wounded in a shooting incident early Saturday evening on Martin Street is required to undergo surgery at the St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 35-year-old, was on Martin Street near 21st Avenue at around 7:10 p.m. on Saturday when police responded to a shooting in the area. Police said they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the upper leg.

“At this time, it appears that the victim was walking on Martin Street when he was approached by two males, one of whom produced a handgun and made a verbal demand for personal property,” Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit, said. “As the victim attempted to flee the area on foot, the armed suspect fired at him, striking him in the leg.”

Police called in an ambulance to transport the victim to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. Murray said the victim requires surgery to the wounded leg.

The suspects fled on foot after wounded the victim in an unknown direction, police said. Police are seeking public assistance to solve this case.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact detectives Francisco Brito or Christopher Ravallese of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342.
