The Paterson Health Department has been awarded $3,295,222 in federal funding to continue its fight against HIV/AIDS virus in Passaic and Bergen counties, announced Congressman Bill Pascrell.

“This federal funding will help ensure that thousands of New Jerseyans can receive the services they need to remain healthy,” Pascrell said. “I’ll continue to fight to ensure Passaic and Bergen Counties, and the state at-large continues to receive its fair share of funding from this vital program.”

The funding is provided through the United States Department of Health and Human Services’s (HHS) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program to assist those living with the virus in Bergen-Passaic Transitional Grant Area (TGA) with medical, dental, mental health, case management, transportation, housing assistance, food, and legal services.

The city serves as the lead administrative agency for the funds and is tasked for the overall management and disbursement of the funds to medical and community-based providers throughout the two counties.

“In December 2014 Paterson celebrated its twentieth year of service delivery to individuals and/or families impacted by HIV/AIDS,” Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres said in a statement. “Through this federally funded program we are able to provide support to 17 agencies and/or organizations in order to assist with improving the quality of life to those in need.”

Despite two decades of helping those who are severely affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic the need remains strong, Pascrell said.

“The $3.2 million is the TGA’s partial award and we are thankful for the opportunity to continue our work in helping people meet some of their basic needs,” Torres said.
