The Eva’s Village opened its state-of-the-art training kitchen Friday morning to bolster its emergent culinary school.

Official known as the Culinary School at Eva’s Village, the school provides job training skills to people in need. It was approved as a private vocational school by the New Jersey Department of Education and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Classes began in March 2014 at the non-profit’s community kitchen, soon thereafter the organization garnered the interest of the LeRoy Schecter Foundation of Kearny which agreed to provide a grant to support operation at the new faculty for two years. While the non-profit was running the culinary program out of its community kitchen construction was underway at 133 Prince Street.

In January 2014 the school began a fully integrated curriculum at the newly constructed kitchen teaching skills, techniques, and quantity cooking experience to students. The school has a capacity of 24 students per course.

This year the school will run four courses each beginning in January, April, June, and September. School’s curriculum spans five months with students placed in a full-time industry internship during the fifth month. Graduates of the school receive placement, according to the non-profit.

Presently, the school boasts a 90-percent placement rate based on the March 2014 class, according to the non-profit known as the largest anti-poverty organization in New Jersey. The organization’s statistics show the July class already has 30-percent of its graduates actively employed and another 20-percent in final stage of placement.

The school’s course are taught by an experienced instructor. Students receive professional mentorship and are equipped with hands-on experience.
