Three Morris Canal Greenway hikes have been planned this spring in Clifton, Paterson, and Woodland Park, according to the Passaic County Department of Planning and Economic Development.

The event exposes hikers to the history of the Morris Canal which served as the engine of development for North Jersey during the 1800s and the early 1900s transporting coal from Pennsylvanian’s Lehigh Valley to the New York-New Jersey markets and reviving North Jersey’s iron industry.

The canal also served as the main route for the transportation of farm products, raw material, manufactured goods, and construction materials before the development of the railroads which put the Morris Canal out of business.
