My name is Corey L. Teague and I am officially announcing my candidacy for reelection to a 2nd term on the Paterson Board of Education. For the past three and a half years I have fought tirelessly for the educational well-being of our children.

Many times I’ve had to fight alone but that never deterred me from standing up for what I believed in. Since 2010, I have been actively involved with education advocacy. Working alongside community organizations such as the PEF (Paterson Education Fund), PEOC (Paterson Education Organizing Council) and various religious/civic groups to help improve parental awareness and overall involvement.

I have conducted parent workshops and have met on many occasions with parents in an effort to assist in addressing their concerns. I have partnered with leaders of various faiths throughout the city to work on curtailing violence, poverty, homelessness and unemployment, issues which continue to plague our community daily.

The fight doesn’t end in the classroom. I have worked tirelessly to assist parents who are dealing with issues outside of the classroom that are affecting the child inside of the classroom. Being a school board member requires commitment and sacrifice. I enjoy what I do and I am committed to continuing the fight.

As chairman of the Parent & Community Committee I work hand in hand with parents in helping them to navigate through a system that can often be complex. Battling such issues as the over-testing of our children (PARCC) has been a primary focus for me. My children attend school in Paterson so I have a vested interested in this fight. It’s not about me, it’s about every student in the Paterson School System.

We need to ensure that we keep folks on the board who aren’t afraid of a good fight. We need to keep people on the board who aren’t concerned with being popular. We need to keep people on the board who aren’t concerned with making the status quo.

I’m one of the few who don’t mind stepping on a few toes to get the job done. I’m one of the few who don’t mind getting on a few nerves to see that our children receive what they need and so rightfully deserve.

My mission can be summed up in my original promise to you back in 2012: “I will fight for you, your children, and the entire community!”

Corey Teague
School board member
