A 21-year-old city man was wounded by gunfire as he was driving through North 4th Street and Haledon Avenue early Sunday morning.

The victim was struck in the upper arm by a gunman who stepped into the road and fired at his sport utility vehicle (SUV) at about 5 a.m., said police director Jerry Speziale. The director said the victim’s SUV crashed into several parked vehicles on North 4th Street.

Police said the victim was driving his vehicle west on North 4th Street when the gunman stepped on to the roadway and fired several times at the traveling SUV at which point the driver was struck.

The victim lost control of the vehicle damaging several cars parked on the side of the road. The director said one or more suspects fled the area in an unknown direction.

Speziale said the victim was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he is in stable condition.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact detectives Francisco Brito or Christopher Ravallese of the Ceasefire Unit at (973) 321-1342.
