Gunfire erupts in East 23rd Street two-group altercation leaving a 45-year-old wounded

A city man was wounded during the early morning hours of Sunday on East 23rd Street, according to the Paterson Police Department.

The victim, 45-year-old, was wounded in the lower back at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, police said.

Police said the victim was on East 23rd Street between 11th and 12th avenues when an altercation broke out between two groups of people.

“During that altercation, multiple shots were fired, and the vehicle was struck from behind while attempting to flee the area on foot,” Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit, said. “After being struck, the victim was able to get to a residence on East 23 Street where he sought assistance.”

Police received reports of gunfire in the area and responded to the scene. Police located the victim in a residence on East 23rd Street, Murray said.

The victim was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. Murray said the victim is in stable condition at the hospital.
