The American Red Cross is assisting nine families displaced by the massive fire on Godwin Avenue that damaged several buildings on Wednesday afternoon.

Three members of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team were dispatched to the city to assist 32 people displaced by the fire, the organization said.

Disaster responders met with the family in order to provide solace and emergency assistance for temporary shelter, food, clothing, and supplies. The team also provided comfort kits that included personal care items to the families.

The fire started at 175 Godwin Avenue at around 12:55 p.m. on Wednesday and quickly spread to 173, 177, 179, and 181.

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours before bringing it under control. At least six firefighters suffered injuries that required hospital treatment.

Red Cross volunteers will remain available to provide support, counseling, and referral services to the families.

All emergency assistance to the affected families are provided free of charge thanks to public donation to the Red Cross.

Donation to the Red Cross can be made through, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
