Three Passaic County sheriff’s officers and their K-9 partners graduated from the Morris County K-9 Academy Patrol Class, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

Berdnik on Thursday said the newly trained police dogs and their handlers will join the sheriff’s narcotics team to patrol county streets by January 2016.

“The training these teams received will enable the department and other Passaic county police departments to continue to investigate and make arrest regarding illegal narcotic activity,” Berdnik said.

The canines and their handlers underwent six-month of training in tracking, obedience, and suspect apprehension at the academy, Berdnik said. This part of the training equipped the three teams with the necessary skills for K-9 patrol.

A six-year veteran at the sheriff’s office Carlos Aymat of North Haledon received training with his K-9 partner Luna. The other two sheriff’s officers to receive training with their canines were Brian Wunk, three-year veteran, of Ringwood and his canine Rex, and Peter Pogorzelski, three-year veteran, of North Haledon and K-9 Nero.

“The K-9 teams are often used as a tool to locate illegal narcotics and help facilitate arrests,” Berdnik said.
