A program has been launched by the Paterson Housing Authority to train city entrepreneurs and assist them in getting started in business.

The Paterson Housing Authority Entrepreneurship and Small Business Incubator Program will offer an 11-week certification program through collaboration with the Passaic County Community College, Paterson’s Small Business Development Center, and the Greater Newark Enterprise Corporation.

The training program will equip an entrepreneur with the tools necessary to turn their business idea into a successful small business. The individual will have to pay $100 to enroll into the training program which will direct him through the early and advanced stage of entrepreneurial process, according to the authority.

Small business is the backbone of the city’s economy, Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres said in a statement.

The program aims to improve self-sufficiency and reduce unemployment in the city. After an entrepreneur finishes the 11-week certificate program she will eligible to enter into the Small Business Incubator Program. This program will afford 12-month of office space, workshops, and coaching to get the entrepreneurs on a successful track in operating his business.

“We are very proud to offer this very valuable entrepreneurship program that offers individuals the tools to reach their dreams of self-sufficiency through their own business,” Torres said.

Executive Director of the Paterson Housing Authority Irma Gorham emphasized the need for multiple streams of income to protect against falling on hard times. “Multiple streams of income is crucial in protecting one’s self and family against the unavoidable ups and downs of economic and industry cycles,” Gorham said.

The certification portion of the program began on Wednesday, October 7, 2015. The training program runs from 6-9 p.m. at the Christopher Hope Center on Temple Street.

Cost for the 11-week program is $100. For more information about this program contact June Bryant at (973) 345-5987 or via email [email protected].
