City police arrested 26-year-old David Reams, who was wanted for felony possession of a firearm, on Sunday evening, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Reams was located at the Riverside Housing Development near McLean Boulevard at about 6 p.m. when detectives acting on a tip responded to the area.

Speziale said Reams was taken into custody and charged with federal felony possession of a firearm charge. He said the arrested suspect also has local outstanding warrants. The director said charges against Reams stem from an incident that occurred in the city during the summer months.

Police officer Michael Sisco and others from the patrol division sighted Reams on Plesinger Place within the housing development. Sisco and others transported Reams to city police lockup.

On Monday morning agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) visited headquarters to take Reams into federal custody.

Reams is being detained in the Essex County Jail awaiting federal proceedings, said the director.

The arrest resulted from an ongoing initiative between the ATF and the city’s Ceasefire Unit to step up interdiction of firearms within the city, said Speziale.

A veteran detective from the Ceasefire Unit was recently assigned to work with ATF, said the director.

“The message should ring loud and clear, gun toting criminals will be held to the highest standard of the law and should they be found guilty will be incarcerated federally far away from the state of New Jersey,” said Speziale. “We have stepped up our efforts, partnered with the community and our federal counterparts and will absolutely achieve a safer Paterson by any lawful means necessary.”

Speziale further stated in the months ahead the city will adjust its strategy to remove dangerous criminals from the streets.
