A 23-year-old city man was shot in the foot on Saturday evening on East 25th Street, according to police.

The victim was wounded in the foot at about 8 p.m. while engaged in an altercation in the area of 791 East 25th Street, said police director Jerry Speziale.

The victim was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released, according to police.

Speziale said the city is close to releasing its safe city initiative and focus deterrent policing to curb gun violence.

“Those that defy the law are going to find themselves in federal prosecutions, strong state prosecutions, and sentenced accordingly. We’re not messing around,” said the director. “They will be spending long extended prison time far far away from New Jersey.”
