Teague: Paterson has reached a turning point

The City of Paterson has reached a turning point. Taxes continues to skyrocket while the representation for the level of taxes being paid is nonexistent. Here we are, once again, practically being forced to absorb a 6.1% municipal tax increase.

As if that’s not enough, the city’s school district is discussing the possibility of imposing a school levy increase of their own on the backs of Paterson taxpayers to the tune of $10.6 million dollars. That would be a school based tax increase of 27.2%.

We cannot allow this to happen.

Taxpayers cannot be the “go-to” every time the city decides that it’s time to collect revenue. Every person who ran for a seat in municipal government ran on the slogans of LOWERING TAXES, LOWERING CRIME, and REBUILDING the city.

We need to pay close attention to who has been living up to these campaign commitments. It can no longer be about speeches, cookouts, dinners, banquets, giveaways or raffles. All of that, though it might seem good, is just smoke and mirrors.

What we need are tangible, actual and noticeable changes to the way our city government operates.

We need those changes to place in Paterson immediately.
