Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres announced he will speak at the United Nations conference on May 18, 2016 on the subject of immigrant relations.

Torres received invitation to speak at the conference called Meeting the Critical Challenges of Migration and the Creation of Sustainable Communities before the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The council is one of six organs of the United Nations. It’s the principal body tasked to make recommendations on economic, social, and environmental issues as well as implementation of internationally agreed upon development goals.

New York-based Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization is hosting the conference in partnership with UN Habitat. Conference’s focus this year will be on migrant settlement centering on sustainability, physical planning, and the absorption of migrant population in existing cities.

The conference will bring together high-level experts and leaders from national and local governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), foundations, and industry. Case studies from around the world will be presented on how to host migrants and the lessons that have been learned.
