A group of John F. Kennedy High School students filmed a substance abuse awareness video called the “Cool Kids Campaign” for the Municipal Alliance Prevention Program to deliver a message against drug abuse by placing flyers on lunch tables.
Kennedy was one of five schools — out of 25 which competed at the Passaic County Teen Summit – selected to receive a $500 award late last year to create a substance abuse awareness campaign. The students at the high school came up with the idea of placing informative flyers on lunch tables to target all students. The flyers include information about drug abuse and even include information about resources.
Shamaysha Canty, a ninth grader at the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy at John F. Kennedy High School, said the students from various academies in the high school worked together to create the three-minute video.
Canty said the school is competing against four other New Jersey high schools to win a $500 prize. Other schools in the competition are Butler High School, Lakeland Regional High School, Mary Help of Christians Academy, and Wayne Hills High School.
Canty urged school board members and others to support her school by voting for the Kennedy video at the United for Prevention in Passaic County website. She said voting ends on April 15th, 2016.
The public service announcement video by all five high schools can be found by clicking here or visiting: http://wpunj.edu/uppc/teen-summit.dot.
The winner will be announced on May 18th, 2016.
